Tea Honkasali – Landscapes of the mind

Tea Honkasali – Landscapes of the mind
In Little Finlandia 4th-30th June 2025
Nature is a great source of inspiration in my paintings. The wave-like movement created by the wind in a meadow, a pattern in the water, or the lush banks of a stream where various plants form a fascinating composition.
I love flowers and the illusion of movement created when they wither is fascinating. I look for movement, even in something that is still. The subjects of my paintings are born in a moment when the perfect light forms a beautiful composition. The light is constantly changing so it is important to grasp the moment if you want to capture it in your work.
In my job I plan photoshoots; the colour scheme, objects, lighting, angles and framing. My paintings are an extension of these images, where I can highlight even the smallest details. I can determine the scale; enlarge or reduce. Framing the image is the most important thing in composition. A surprising framing makes even the everyday interesting, engaging and new.
I paint in natural light so that I can see the colours correctly. I don’t create still lifes for my paintings, they are found in my environment. It’s not so important what I paint as long as the composition and colours speak to me. I want to highlight details and moods that might otherwise go unnoticed. I think beauty is everywhere, if you know how to look for it.
The artist
Tea Honkasalo is a trained interior designer and works as an interior editor.
Honkasalo’s works have a strong atmosphere, even if the subjects are only strictly defined details. The subjects of the paintings are often found locally in nature or in gardens. In her works, Honkasalo wants to highlight that flowers are beautiful even when they have withered and dropped their petals. Although Honkasalo depicts objects that are still, movement is an
important element in her works. Light and color, in turn, create the mood of the works, which varies from moment to moment and season to season.
